Network Licensing System

Fekete has developed a versatile Network Licensing System (NLS) that supports user mobility and provides tools to network administrators that enable them to configure and monitor network licenses and users.

NLS Benefits

• Laptop users will have the ability to temporarily “check-out” (borrow) a network seat, allowing them to “go mobile” in the field with their F.A.S.T. software.
• Laptop users with “checked-out” network seats (when connected to the network) will auto-detect if there is a newer version of F.A.S.T. software on their corporate network. They can click to upgrade to the corporate version. This feature is also available for remote Wide Area Network (WAN) workstations.

• The ability to update software licenses while F.A.S.T. software is in use.
• An audit trail of software usage and statistics.
• The ability to specify which users have privileges to “check-out” a network seat.
• A record of all network seats that are currently “checked-out” and by whom.
• The ability to disable “check-out” and local upgrading on a software license basis.
• The ability to set the “check-out” duration of a network seat.
• The ability to share different network license schemes for the same F.A.S.T. application. This allows users of a more restrictive network license (LAN) to use seats from a less restrictive license (Citrix), if available.
• The ability to allow F.A.S.T. software to update and register OCX’s controls on start up.
• The ability to specify the location of Fekete’s working folder that is unique to the user.
• Remote WAN workstations and “checked-out” laptop users will have their local license information automatically updated to match the corporate version.
• When upgrading a F.A.S.T. software application the install will notify the license manager to update the license record with the software’s new version number.

How NLS Works

The NLS consist of 3 parts: the licensing client, the licensing server and the license manager.

1. The licensing client is built into each F.A.S.T. application and is responsible for communicating with the licensing service on the network. When a F.A.S.T. application starts up, the licensing client connects to the licensing server and requests authorization to allow the software to run.
2. Periodically the licensing client will send a message to the licensing server telling it that “I am still here and working." If the licensing server does not receive this message as expected, it will release the network seat and make it available for others to use. As the F.A.S.T. application shuts down, the licensing client sends a final message to the licensing server saying “thank you and good bye." The licensing server then releases the seat and waits for the next call into action.
3. The license manager allows the network administrator to configure the behaviour of F.A.S.T. applications, the licensing client, and the licensing server. In addition, the license manager allows the network administrator to monitor the usage of F.A.S.T. software and borrowed network seats.

Security Hotfix for FAST Software

	There is currently a date related issue with our licensing service. It most likely affects users who use software versions released before April, 2007. Users of FAST RTA, FAST WellTest, FAST ValiData and FAST FieldNotes will not necessarily have this issue if they have upgraded to the latest version. If you are experience the following licensing error : MySecure – The Software Key xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx (version 1), prod id X is no longer valid, please follow the procedure below to apply a security hot fix.
StandAlone and Bitlock License Users
	Click the appropriate Version x.xxx link from the table below to download the DigitalFortress.dll file.
	When the File Download dialog box appears, click the Save button.
	Copy the DigitalFortress.dll file into the application's executable folder. The default location is C:\Fast\Appication Name.
Network Users
	Click the appropriate Version x.xxx link from the table below to download the DigitalFortress.dll file.
	When the File Download dialog box appears, click the Save button.
	Copy the file DigitalFortress.dll into the application's executable folder. The default location can be found using the License Manager application, under the License tab.
	NOTE: Network users that have checked out a license at any time will require the hot fixes for each product/version on their PCs. If you are currently checked out you do not need to check in to apply these hot fixes.
